Literacy - We completed our Halloween-themed read aloud book, The Best Halloween Ever featuring recurring characters from a beginning of the year read aloud book. Students compared and connected events between the two stories.
Math - We continued our unit on Geometry, focusing on identifying and drawing right, acute, and obtuse angles with protractors. Students practiced using a protractor to measure angles and we moved into perimeter and area of shapes. We continued updating our interactive notebooks with examples and definitions related to concepts from this unit. Writing - We finished our "Which Witch" writing piece and participated in a writing activity on Friday. Students were read their descriptive paragraphs about each drawing and had to figure out which witch was which! Science - We began our unit on plants and energy, with a focus on food chains and webs. Friday, students did an experiment making "Oobleck," a non-Newtonian substance that is simultaneously a liquid and a solid. Check our class photos for more! Social Studies - We began lesson 2 on physical and human features of New Hampshire. Students learned about the ever-changing landscape of NH, including notches and valleys dug out by recurring ice ages. We also began lesson 2 vocabulary. Microsociety - We introduced the MACS bank and students were given a lesson about how and why banks are used in society. With their own bank accounts, students will be responsible for withdrawing money using their checkbooks. We did a practice lesson on how to write a check and the importance of using checks with their accounts. We also discussed which skills would be desirable for eager employees looking to join the workforce at one of our four ventures! Students will have to complete resumes and interview for positions.

Literacy - We completed our read aloud book, "The Tiger Rising" and wrote in our reading notebooks about character evolution throughout the story. Students reviewed and updated their reading logs with newly finished books, and we discussed what makes a book easy, just right, or a challenge.
Math - We began Geometry, focusing on points, lines, line segments, and rays. We worked in our interactive notebooks and completed workbook pages related to this concepts. Students used their new whiteboards to reinforce math concepts we had covered so far this school year. Writing - We continued work on our Which Witch writing piece. Students are writing descriptive paragraphs about their own witches using all five senses. The focus is content-appropriate adjectives to help describe a scene. Science - We finished our rock cycle unit with an experiment about sedimentary rocks. Students used starburst and Nerd candies to recreate layered sedimentary rock. We reviewed the unit on Thursday for our Rock Cycle test on Friday. Social Studies - We finished preparing our social studies vocabulary and reviewed with a game on Thursday for the vocabulary quiz on Friday Microsociety - Students continued to campaign and run for government positions within our Microsociety. Students who chose to run for House of Representative and Senate prepared and delivered speeches. I am very pleased to announce 4th grader, Natalie Charlton, was elected Senator for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Another congratulations goes out to Alicia Cunha, who was voted in as our 4th grade rep for House of Representatives. Tuesday and Wednesday were Microsociety-focused days at the church. Students prepared campaign speeches, created posters and buttons, and our first election took place. We ratified our school Constitution, and students were sworn in as citizens of Microsociety. I am happy to say that 8 fourth graders took part in running for President or Vice President, and am even happier to announce our own fourth grader, Caleb Leblanc, was chosen as Microsociety's first Vice President! Way to go, Caleb!
Literacy - Students finished gathering evidence and debated their partners opinion related to a topic from our read aloud book "The Tiger Rising." Math - We continued studying conversion charts and worked through word problems related to conversions. We spent time putting more information into our interactive math notebooks, and students were tasked with writing their own conversion-related math word problems. Word problems continue to be a challenge, so we will be sure to spend extra time focusing on decoding them. Writing - Students handed in their final drafts of our first 3 writing pieces to add to their portfolio. We began a new October-themed writing piece based on a "show, don't tell" writing strategy. We will continue this throughout next week. Science - We continued studying the rock cycle with a focus on sedimentary rocks and how they are formed. We will look to finish the rock cycle next week. Social Studies - We continued our focus on map skills, and using latitude and longitude coordinates to locate states on a map. We finished our vocabulary words and definitions related to the chapter. Literacy - Students picked a topic from our real aloud book "The Tiger Rising" and gathered evidence to have a debate with a partner.
Math - We introduced measurements conversions and began creating our interactive math notebooks. Students worked on word problems converting feet to yards, inches to feet, etc. This focus will continue next week as we go through the metric system and solve problems related to conversions. Writing - Students finished up their final drafts of our opinion piece, "Is TV good or bad?" If students finish their writing assignment, they are allowed to free-write using a prompt book. We will be starting new writing pieces in our new classroom next week! Science - We continued studying the rock cycle with a focus on metamorphic rocks and how they are formed. Social Studies - We began our unit on New Hampshire with a focus on map skills. We introduced vocabulary words and definitions related to the chapter. MicroSociety - Four new businesses were announced at town meeting. Students whose businesses were not accepted in the first round will be able to work as managers or employees at open businesses, or run for government positions. Our Constitution was ratified and our class elected our Representative, Vedanth Penumatsa. Caleb Leblanc won a citizenship award for his efforts in group cooperation. We finished the week with a lesson about cottage industry's vs. factories. The students were put to work! |
