Literacy - We finished our read aloud book, The Lemonade War, and discussed how to identify story elements (plot, characters, theme, setting). Students were tasked with using Google Drawing to illustrate a pivotal scene from the novel that had an impact on the overall plot. We began studying figurative language, discussing idioms, similes, metaphors, and how to appropriately use this language to spruce up our writing. Students made personal simile posters in which they developed their own simile to fit their personality. Check out photos page soon for completed posters...! Writing - We continue to work on weekly spelling. We began our next unit on opinion writing, with each student tasked with writing a convincing 5 paragraph essay on why their favorite holiday is the best. We are practicing using exciting hooks for introductions, outlining at least 3 reasons for their choice, and using details to validate their reasons. Knowing when to start a new paragraph has been a challenge in writing, but we are making progress! Math - We continued doing our daily math fact fluency drills and move through the 3rd unit in our math book. We have been focused on equivalent fractions, placing fractions on a number line, comparing fractions, converting base-ten fractions into decimals, decimal place value, and more! We are really hitting a stride in math class and continue to challenge each other with higher level skills. Science - Our continued our next Unit, Earth Movements! We presented our landform slideshows and moved onto our Unit 2 vocabulary terms. We have been learning about plate tectonics and the constant state of change in the Earth. Students loved to see how the continents fit together like puzzle pieces and how the inner workings of the Earth move plates around the earth, smashing together to make mountains or deep ocean trenches. We will get into the rock cycle and different types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic) as the unit continues. MicroSociety - Businesses are booming! Marketplace has been open for all students to spend their hard-earned MicroBucks. We had a new election cycle for President and Vice President of MicroCity. The primaries are over, and the general election will happen Friday, Dec 16th. Check back soon to find out who was voted our new President and Vice President
