Literacy - We continued our read aloud, The Library Card, stopping to make predictions and text-to text connections. Reading assessments were done and all students got to spend some time on our reading program Lexia in the computer lab.
Math - We continued Unit 4 with a focus on partial products for multiplication. All 4th graders took a progress monitoring math assessment, and I was happy to see many students with growth! We have been working hard in the computer lab on our math drills and focusing our attention on 4th grade Khan Academy topics. Writing - We continued a new writing unit on opinionated pieces. We began a new activity called "pop-up writing!" Students are given an opion writing prompt and have 15 minutes to make their case as to why they think their opinion is correct. We did a few writing activities with a focus on sequencing, punctuation, and spelling. Science - We continued our new chapter on magnetism. We learned about motors, generators, and electromagnetism. I set up an electromagnet with a switch at the front of the room and we got to witness an ordinary nail become magnetic through the power of electricity! We also did an experiment to visualize the magnetic fields of some common experiment magnets. Check our class photo's page for more! Microsociety - March will be the final month for our current businesses. Students continue to work and shop! See the class photo's page for more. *We continued our "burning questions" activity in which one student per week poses any question with which they are curious. The class will have the week to find the answer and discuss. Our second question solved the mystery of a confusing computer game title. Ask your child about it!

Literacy - We completed our group novel study for Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. We discussed Japanese culture and the good luck charms of paper cranes. Students then followed a 25 step instruction to fold their own paper cranes. Check our class photo's page to see the finished products! We began our new read aloud, The Library Card, by author Jerry Spinelli. Students have been making text-to-text connections between this novel and our previous Spinelli novel, Maniac Magee.
Math - We continued Unit 4 with a focus on partitioned rectangles and partials products for multiplication. We learned a new math game to practice these multiplication strategies. We also continued practice conversions using the metric system for liquid and weight measurements. Writing - We began a new writing unit on opinionated pieces. Students were first tasked with a short opinion piece based off the prompt "What is my favorite holiday?" We set up online log-ins for the grammar-focused website www.noredink.com. We will take some time to explore this website next week. Science - We continued our new chapter on magnetism. We will look to continue exploring these mysterious forces in the coming weeks! Microsociety - March will be the final month for our current businesses. Students continue to work and shop! See the class photo's page for more. *We introduced our "burning questions" in which one student per week will pose any question with which they are curious about. The class will have the week to find the answer and discuss. Our first question took us down the path of ancestry. Ask your child about it! Literacy - We continued our group novel study for Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Our novel is complete, with a few days work of comprehension study for next week. Students were also challenged to read 300 chapters (4th grade's goal) for Dr. Seuss' Read Across America week. I am happy to report we reached our goal!
Math - We began Unit 4 with product extensions (by 10 and 100) and spent some time practicing our daily math drills using XtraMath website in the computer lab. We also set up Khan Academy log-ins and all students have begun their Academy "mission." Both XtraMath and Khan Academy are great resources to reinforce math (or other subject) concepts at home. Student's know their log-ins, but feel free to email me if you would like a copy of their log-in information for them to practice at home. Writing - We finished our grammar unit with a focus on adjectives. We continued typing instruction in the computer lab. We will return to writing pieces at the beginning of next week with a focus on opinion pieces. Science - We began our new chapter on magnetism. Students were hands-on testing magnetic forces throughout the classroom (and took magnets home to test further items). More experiments with magnets to come next week. Microsociety - March will be the final month for our current businesses. There will be a meeting next week for all students who are interested in starting new ventures or want to run for a government position. Stay tuned! ** Health class is suspended until the return of our nurse from maternity leave. |
