Smarter Balance testing took place during the week of April 4th-8th
Literacy - We finished our read aloud, The Library Card, and continued a series from the author Jerry Spinelli. Our newest read aloud is Loser. Students have been doing an excellent job making connections between the various novels from this author. All students chose a biography from the series "I Am..." Students will be using these texts to complete biography prompts and will eventually create a poster and present what they have learned from their eminent person. Math - We moved onto division (finally!) Students have been doing excellent work doing long division. Having multiplication facts down have made the transition to division much smoother. We also spent time finding the area and perimeter of irregular shapes. This skill caused trouble during our last assessment, and many students have been making improvements on this concept. Writing - Weekly spelling work continues. We also continued "pop-up writing" with an emphasis on a strong introduction, main ideas with details, and a wrap-up conclusion. Students are given an opinion writing prompt and have 15 minutes to make their case as to why they think their opinion is correct. Social Studies - We began our unit on New Hampshire history. Students have been learning many facts about their home state, with each student working on researching and completing a NH history packet. We started reading short passages from the book "It Happened In New Hampshire" to learn about historical events from NH that might not be covered in general history textbooks. Microsociety - New job training has started! Job fair and interviews took place (check out our class photos). Workers have reported to their new job with our next Marketplace opening up the week we return from April break. *We continued our "burning questions" activity in which one student per week poses any question with which they are curious. The class will have the week to find the answer and discuss. Our 5th question wondered about earthquakes. Ask your child about it!
